About the Role
Tonic Technologies is a fast-growing FinTech startup founded in 2019, dedicated to revolutionizing monetary transactions and payment remittances across Nigeria and Ghana. We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to build, secure, and scale the core financial infrastructure that powers wallets, virtual dollar cards, bill payments, and merchant APIs for over a million users.
Key Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend systems using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Own critical financial workflows including wallet funding, withdrawals, currency conversions, and transaction reconciliation down to the last kobo.
- Build reliable REST APIs and integrate third-party payment partners while effectively handling retries, race conditions, and idempotency.
- Collaborate with frontend, mobile, and product teams to deliver seamless user experiences for consumer and B2B merchant platforms.
- Ensure high availability, monitoring, and security by deploying containerized services through Kubernetes and Argo CD.
- Minimum of 6 years of backend engineering experience building production-grade Node.js applications with TypeScript.
- Deep understanding of database transactions, caching strategies, and performance optimization.
- Proven experience integrating third-party APIs and managing webhook failures or duplicates gracefully.
- Strong commitment to writing clean, tested code and participating in rigorous code reviews.
- Familiarity with fintech concepts such as double-entry bookkeeping, payment gateways, or card issuing is a strong plus.
